Leucorrhoea

also known as white discharge, is a condition where there is an abnormal, excessive discharge of white or yellowish mucus from the vagina. This discharge is a common issue faced by many women, and while it can be a normal physiological process (especially during ovulation or pregnancy), excessive or foul-smelling leucorrhoea may indicate an underlying issue such as an infection, hormonal imbalance, or other gynecological problems.

In Ayurveda, Leucorrhoea is referred to as "Shveta Pradar" or "Vaginal White Discharge." It is believed to be caused by an imbalance in the Pitta or Kapha dosha. This imbalance leads to the production of excessive, unhealthy vaginal discharge.

Causes of Leucorrhoea in Ayurveda:

  • Pitta Imbalance: Excess Pitta (the element of heat and transformation) in the body can cause inflammation and infection, leading to an abnormal discharge. This is usually accompanied by symptoms like irritation, burning, or a foul smell.
  • Kapha Imbalance: Kapha dosha governs structure and lubrication in the body. When Kapha is out of balance, it can lead to excessive, thick, white, or sticky discharge.
  • Ama (Toxins): Poor digestion (low Agni), unhealthy food habits, and stress can lead to the accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the reproductive system, which can result in leucorrhoea.
  • Infections: Vaginal infections caused by bacteria, yeast, or fungi (like Candida) can cause excessive discharge and other symptoms such as itching and burning.
  • >Hormonal Imbalance: Hormonal changes, particularly during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, can lead to abnormal vaginal discharge.
  • Poor Hygiene: Inadequate hygiene or the use of harsh chemicals in soaps or feminine products can disturb the natural balance of the vaginal flora, leading to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria.
  • Stress and Lifestyle Factors: Emotional stress, lack of sleep, unhealthy diet, and sedentary lifestyle can disrupt the body's internal balance and contribute to leucorrhoea.
