Cholesterol

is a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to build healthy cells, having high cholesterol levels can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Cholesterol comes in two main types:

  • LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): Often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. High levels of LDL can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can block blood flow and increase the risk of cardiovascular problems.
  • HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): Known as "good" cholesterol. HDL helps remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, reducing the risk of heart disease.
  • Triglycerides: Another type of fat in the blood. Elevated triglyceride levels are also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

  • In Ayurveda, cholesterol imbalance is seen as a result of poor digestion (Agni), accumulation of Ama (toxins), and an imbalance in the doshas—primarily Kapha, which governs fat, stability, and structure in the body.

Causes of High Cholesterol According to Ayurveda:

    • Kapha Imbalance: An excess of Kapha can lead to sluggish digestion, fat accumulation, and the buildup of Ama, which can cause high cholesterol.
    • Poor Digestion (Mandagni): If the digestive fire is weak, the body fails to properly process food, leading to the creation of toxins (Ama) that contribute to cholesterol buildup.
    • Improper Diet: A diet rich in processed foods, fried foods, excessive dairy, sugars, and unhealthy fats can exacerbate cholesterol imbalance.
    • Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can lead to the accumulation of fat and cause cholesterol levels to rise.
    • Stress: Chronic stress can lead to inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and unhealthy eating habits, contributing to elevated cholesterol levels.
    • Genetic Factors: Inherited conditions like familial hypercholesterolemia can also affect cholesterol levels, though Ayurveda can still help with managing and improving overall health.
