Diabetes

is a chronic condition that affects how your body processes blood sugar (glucose). There are two main types:

  • Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to a lack of insulin production.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: The most common form, where the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels.

In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as "Prameha", which is a condition characterized by the frequent passage of urine with an excessive amount of sugar. Ayurveda views diabetes as an imbalance of the Kapha dosha (which governs body structure and stability), though it may also involve imbalances in Vata and Pitta. The condition is seen as a result of poor digestion (low Agni), the accumulation of Ama (toxins), and improper lifestyle and dietary habits.

    Causes of Diabetes in Ayurveda:

    • Imbalanced Agni (Digestive Fire): When the digestive fire is weak (Mandagni), food is not properly digested, leading to the formation of toxins (Ama), which can affect the pancreas and other organs involved in insulin production and regulation.
    • Accumulation of Ama: Toxins accumulate in the body due to poor digestion, unhealthy food choices, stress, or a sedentary lifestyle, causing blockages and disturbances in the body’s natural metabolic processes, leading to diabetes.
    • Kapha Imbalance: Kapha governs stability, nourishment, and lubrication. Excess Kapha can lead to the accumulation of fat, sluggish metabolism, and insulin resistance.
    • Lifestyle Factors: Poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and emotional imbalances can contribute to the development of diabetes by disturbing the doshas, especially Kapha, and leading to metabolic dysfunction.
    • Genetics: Family history and genetic predisposition also play a significant role in the development of diabetes.

When to Consult an Ayurvedic Practitioner

If you are experiencing symptoms of diabetes, such as frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue. If you are already diagnosed with diabetes and want to manage the condition holistically alongside conventional treatment. If you're looking for personalized guidance based on your dosha type and specific symptoms.

Diabetes is a condition related to imbalances in the Kapha dosha, and Ayurveda treats it by addressing digestion, detoxification, and lifestyle factors. Herbal remedies like Ashwagandha, Guduchi, Jamun, and Fenugreek help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. Panchakarma therapies like Abhyanga, Shirodhara, and Basti can support detoxification and balance the doshas. An Ayurvedic diet focused on whole grains, low-glycemic fruits, and bitter, astringent foods can support blood sugar regulation. Exercise, yoga, stress management, and adequate sleep are essential components of managing diabetes in Ayurveda.
